Handwriting beats typing for conceptual learning.
In a series of experiments, students who took notes by hand significantly outperformed laptop note-takers on conceptual questions — even when laptop users recorded more words. The researchers concluded that the slower pace of handwriting forces learners to process and restate information rather than transcribe it verbatim. That cognitive effort is what drives retention.

Testing yourself works better than re-reading.
Students who practiced retrieving information from memory retained roughly twice as much one week later compared to students who spent the same time re-reading the material. The act of recall — not review — is what consolidates memory. This is the retrieval practice effect, and it is one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology.

Forgetting is fast without deliberate review.
Hermann Ebbinghaus documented what is now called the forgetting curve: without any review, people forget roughly half of new information within 24 hours, and up to 80% within a week. The antidote he identified — and that subsequent research has confirmed — is spaced repetition: reviewing material at increasing intervals to interrupt forgetting before it completes.

Generating information yourself strengthens memory.
When people generate information themselves — writing a word, completing a sentence, restating a concept in their own words — they remember it significantly better than when they simply read it. This is the generation effect. It is why the Encode Recall System asks you to write, not highlight. The effort of production is the mechanism of retention.

Interleaving subjects improves long-term mastery.
Blocked practice — studying one topic exhaustively before moving to the next — feels more productive but produces weaker long-term retention. Interleaving different topics or problem types within a study session forces the brain to discriminate between concepts and retrieve the right approach, which strengthens both memory and transfer to new problems.
